Love them or hate them, rom-coms are one of the most popular and prolific movie genres. For the hopeless romantics, they provide a sense of comfort and joy, and give people a break from reality. There are so many rom-coms out there, but only some deserve the hype. Why not let the Valentine’s Day spirit last all of February? Here are the best rom-coms to feel like it’s Valentine’s Day all month (or year) long.
- She’s the Man (2006)
Inspired by Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, the movie follows a girl named Viola (played by Amanda Bynes) who disguises herself as her brother to play on his school’s soccer team because the girl’s team was cut from her school. She falls in love with her new roommate (played by Channing Tatum) while in disguise, and to make it more complicated, all of the side characters have crushes on different people. It’s like a love triangle times four, and the comedy is gold…you have probably heard many one-liners from this 2000s romantic comedy classic.
- She’s All That (1999)
This is a classic “girl takes off her glasses and she’s beautiful” movie, and also a “I made a bet I can make you prom queen” movie. Two completely overused tropes. But for some reason, this movie stands out. Maybe it’s because of the actors, or the clever comedy, but this movie is so fun to watch and perfect for the teen romantics who love to see a satisfying happy ending.
- Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961)
A sequel to 1959’s Gidget, this movie takes Gidget (a talented girl surfer) to Hawaii with her family. Through a series of misunderstandings and jealous hijinks, Gidget and her boyfriend Jeff (aka Moondoggie), along with other characters, try to get back at each other. This movie is funny and witty, engaging, and an ideal teen romance. The movie also has a little bit of a musical element, with characters singing at a few points through the movie. There are so many characters, so it’s definitely fun to watch everyone’s plotline play out. “Gidget is the one for me!”
- High Society (1956)
A musical remake of the classic The Philadelphia Story, this tells the story of a love triangle with three Old Hollywood greats. Princess Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra star in this love story for the ages. A socialite getting ready to remarry, her ex-husband/neighbor who is still hopelessly in love with her, and the reporter who is there to make a story about the upcoming wedding are three parts of this unique storyline. The music is catchy and phenomenal, and all three actors shine in their respective roles.
- To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
This movie is very recent, but is based on books from popular YA author, Jenny Han. Lara Jean is a hopeless romantic who has never dated before, and Peter Kavinsky is the popular school jock. Opposites attract, and what goes from a fake relationship to a real one is so lovely to watch. Their love is so genuine and pure, and they are complete teen goals.
- Sixteen Candles (1984)
I will be honest, some of the comedy in this movie does not hold up. But it is a John Hughes movie, so you know the plot will be complex and a fun time to endure along with the characters. A girl who is longing for the boy who she thinks doesn’t know she exists is a classic trope. Plus, with a relatable character, a weird kid who has a crush on her, and a drunk prom queen, laughs will ensue and a heartening ending will be produced.
- 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Two intriguing love stories, along with a great soundtrack, fun outfits, and opposite personalities make this movie addicting. Somehow I aspire to be both of the leading sisters, Kat and Bianca. This is a great retelling of a classic, and it is somehow relatable and just a joy to rewatch.
- Crossing Delancey (1988)
An independent woman and an owner of a pickle stand get put together by a Jewish matchmaker in 80s New York. This is a story of realizing what you want in life and falling in love with someone unexpected. It accurately describes a relationship between a Jewish grandmother and granddaughter, and is so comforting, funny, and lovely to watch. I believe that this movie is completely underrated, and should be on more people’s watch lists.
- Pillowtalk (1959)
Hollywood icons Doris Day and Rock Hudson star in this underrated romantic comedy. Jan Morrow is a chic, no-nonsense, independent interior designer. Brad Allen is a womanizing composer. These two share a party line (a telephone line with multiple people on it), and let’s just say that comedy ensues. The writing is so funny and endearing, the characters are loveable, and these two stars are captivating on screen.
- The Sweetest Thing (2002)
This movie is so raunchy and fun, and is sprinkled throughout with a romantic storyline. Taking a girls trip to a wedding after meeting your dream man one night, while hijinks ensue, is sure to be a fun ride. Coupled with a great soundtrack, amazing leading women, and funny side characters, this is a completely inappropriate but somehow heartwarming story.
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
This movie is the ultimate romantic-comedy. A woman from a big family (who many can relate to) changes for herself, not for the leading man, because she is unhappy and unconfident. Toula and Ian’s love is so genuine and heartwarming, and they are a perfect match. This movie shows that people who seem like opposites can make the best couples. This movie is always a fun one to rewatch, it never gets old.
