Reading books with a due date: you do it, I do it, we all sometimes pretend to do it, but what about our teachers? “It was fabulous!” raves English teacher Mrs. Messias of West’s teacher book club. “It’s an event that’s always one of my favorite days of the year.” The book club’s meetings occur about five times per school year and are treated to an extensive spread catered by cooking students under the herald of Ms. Bowne, West’s cooking teacher.
At last month’s meeting, while discussing Adriana Trigiani’s Very Valentine, a disappointing number of staff members joined in on the literary circle to break bread and share insights over the selected novel. “More teachers should join book club,” says Mrs. Messias. “It’s a lot of fun!”
Also present at the event was Mrs. Funaro, one of West’s well-read librarians: “It’s great fun: we get to eat great food and talk about great books.”
Wondering what attendees dined on whilst discussing? Ms. Bowne and her students created an Italian feast for the readers. “We prepared four kinds of homemade pasta, Italian cookies, focaccia bread,” said Ms. Bowne. “And cannolis as well as homemade Italian dressing for a salad,” added Emilee Buckman, a senior cooking student.
Interested? Next month’s read is Stolen by Lucy Christopher, “a story about a young girl who is abducted in an airport and held captive by a young man in the Australian outback,” says Mrs. Funaro. If the aforementioned tale appeals to you or might appeal to a West teacher you know, stop by the library for more information or to sign up for some good eats and good reads in the future.
