Since they were first used, bridges have been an effective mode of transportation in the United States and the rest of the world. However, this recent incident shows that you can never be too careful when driving or trusting these bridges that may seem safe. On March 26, 2024, at 1:30 am, a cargo ship leaving the Port of Baltimore, Maryland struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This resulted in the collapse of the bridge.

Since this is still a recent event, the circumstances of this accidental disaster are still in the hands of The Maryland Transportation Department, which has the most information on the current events, routes, and detours, for commercial transportation, despite the damage. After March 28th, the Port of Baltimore remained open for truck transportation. However, this terrible accident has caused global devastation around the nation, primarily due to the casualties. Two people were rescued from the river and they were both admitted to the hospital in quite critical condition. Six workers were missing, and two of their bodies were found. While the other four are still missing, they have been presumed deceased. There was also an incredible amount of damage.  The Francis Scott Key Bridge was constructed in 1977 and ran through Baltimore areas, and is known to be one of the busiest bridges in the United States. The cargo ship Dali had 4,700 of their shipping containers damaged as a result of the collision. The disaster is currently being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who have sent personnel to Baltimore to assist with the tragedy. Regardless of some parts of the port still being open, most of the Port of Baltimore has been closed due to the damage caused by the collapse of the bridge. U.S. President Joe Biden made a statement addressing the disaster. Biden is currently in the process of asking Congress to help fund the reconstruction of the bridge. In response, the federal government gave $60 million in aid.

Despite the tragedy, people are still working to fight the problem and help rebuild the damage done to the bridge. However, it also serves as an important reminder to always be careful.
