Matt Howe: What are you most looking forward to this season as the senior captain of the soccer team?
Sarah McGlinn: Definitely for us to make it to the playoffs, and not only that but to make a deep playoff run which we have been unable to do since I’ve been a part of the team.
MH: How likely do you think your chances of doing that as a team are?
SM: It’s going to be very hard because this year we moved up into a new conference, and we lost a lot of key seniors last year like Erin McBride and Christiana Ogunsami so younger players are going to have to step up and fill that void.
MH: What do you think the team has to do this year differently to improve from last season?
SM: Well with the losses on defense from last season our defense is going to have to especially pick it up. We also just have to learn to play as a team better and trust each other out there on the field.
MH: How do you think you can best play as team?
SM: We have to work together better than last season and it all goes back to trust. We have to trust each other that someone is going to be there when we make a pass down the field. We’re going to have to trust each other that if someone gets beat on defense, someone else will be there with help. That’s what good teams do, and that’s how teams win.
MH: How have the pre-season and practices gone so far?
SM: We’ve been running a lot! So I definitely think we’re going to be one of the best conditioned teams in South Jersey, hopefully all those laps pay off (laughs).
MH: Who do you think are the other key players on the roster this year that are going to make a big impact on the field come game time?
SM: There’s Cali McFadden who’s a junior who will definitely be putting more than a few in the back of the net this season as a forward, and also junior center-back Erin Sullivan who’s coming off of a phenomenal last season. Senior Kim Santos also really strengthens our mid-field, and first time on varsity sophomore Gabby Crawford will make a huge impact on our team playing stopper this year.
MH: So you’re going to continue your soccer career at Temple University next season, can you tell me what the whole recruiting process was like for you?
SM: For me, the whole recruiting process was really stressful, but it was really well worth it in the end as I get to live out my dream of playing Division I soccer.
MH: Final thoughts on this years team?
SM: Its going to be a very exciting season, for sure one to remember. I really just have to play my butt off every game and make every game count for my senior year, I really do want to set the example and lead this team to the playoffs because I know we have the ability to.
