Cherry Hill’s intertown rivalry soccer night was held at Cherry Hill West’s football stadium on September 28, 2024, to a crowded stadium filled with fans from both the West and East side. The Lions looked to defend their sweeps from last year in both the boys’ and girls’ games, to maintain the title of kings and queens of Cherry Hill high school soccer. In a completely opposite scenario to last year, the West side found themselves sporting fully black attire, while the East side was swarmed in a mix of white and black clothing.
At 5:30 PM, the girls’ game kicked off in a matchup that kept the West and East viewers on the edge of their seats. The first half ended off with a tight 1-1 score, both teams exchanging shots on goals and finding similar success offensively. The Lions scored the final and game-winning goal in the second half, winning the rivalry for the second year in a row. Freshman Joelle Mateo and senior Rayna Robertson both scored one goal apiece in the victory, as senior Julia Lewis and Alana Alayo garnered assists. The girls found themselves taking part in an extremely strong and successful team effort, with junior goalie Madison Jarrett recording the win with five saves.
Similar to last year, the 7:30 PM boys’ game was a gridlocked aggressive battle, with low shots on goal and a lack of goals from either side. In a disappointing result, the Lions and Cougars tied 0-0 after two overtime periods, leaving more to be desired from both teams. The spectators remained invested the entire game, with the ball racing back and forth constantly from one side of the field to the other. Senior goalie Jonah Schottland held down the Westside with six saves and was the X-factor of the game for the Lions. Despite the tie, the West boys retained the trophy.
