On November 10, senior Karine Johnson announced her commitment to Drew University with intent to play for their field hockey and lacrosse teams. Johnson is a standout athlete in the Cherry Hill area, with a multitude of sports under her belt, but her focus remains on the two games close to her heart. Johnson’s commitment to college for athletics is the result of 11 years of hard work in lacrosse and 12 in field hockey. The games of lacrosse and field hockey attracted Johnson due to their fast-paced play, coinciding with her fondness of running.
Johnson was one of the Lady Lions’ field hockey’s team-leading goal scorers, with 10 on the season and chalked up 3 assists. She stated that some highlights of the 2024 campaign were beating a ranked Eastern squad 3-2 in overtime in late September, as well as nabbing shutout wins against Lenape and Rancocas Valley in October.
In terms of recruitment experience, Johnson did not expect to be a college athlete this time last year. “I wasn’t looking to commit anywhere,” Johnson stated. “The lacrosse coach reached out and I loved it.”
Johnson found love at first sight when she visited Drew, her destiny changing and it made her come to the realization that she would soon be a full-time college athlete. “It kinda just fell into my lap, making me process different[ly] than most people,” Johnson added.
Johnson looks to end her West athletic career on the lacrosse field, seeking to improve on her team’s record of 15-5 from last year. The team dominated last year, making their way to the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament for Group 3. Johnson looks most forward to playing and hanging out with her team one last time, stating, “We have so much fun together. I think this year we can be really good and have a successful season.”
