Who is Derek Chauvin?
Derek Chauvin is a former police officer, who gained lots of international attention for murdering George Floyd, a forty-six-year-old man, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by kneeling on his neck for a long period, for no reason. Chauvin gained this attention, specifically when around the time of May 2020, the video was captured of him kneeling on Floyd’s neck and acting irrationally. When it was proven that kneeling on Floyd’s neck was a big part of his death, Chauvin was eventually arrested and convicted for second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in April 2021.
Why is his Presence Brought up Again?
Recently, Derek Chauvin was stabbed while in an Arizona federal prison. According to various sources, such as NBC News, “Chauvin was hospitalized Friday following an assault at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution at Tucson.” Law enforcement has released little to no details other than that Chauvin had been severely injured by the assault. Although, medical professionals say that he is expected to survive. A question that has been asked everywhere is, why was Chauvin involved in this stabbing? Was it for his behavior? What is there no actual objective? Was it because of Chauvin’s actions?
Who did It?
Federal prosecutors told Independent (News), “John Turscak stabbed Chauvin 22 times in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, with an improvised knife, federal prosecutors said. Turscak, 52, told correctional officers he would’ve killed Chauvin had they not responded so quickly, prosecutors said.” Still, no one knows John’s true objective, but he did tell FBI agents that he had no intention of killing Chauvin. However, he had been planning on the attack for around a month, and a good portion of it was because of Chauvin being a high-profile suspect.
Further Information
Additionally, the reason why no one knows the exact reason for this attack, and how and why it began, is because as described by AP News, the Federal Correction Institute, a medium-security prison, has been afflicted with security lapses, and staffing shortages. The facility also has around 380 inmates -so not many staff- and trying to maintain a safe prison environment is quite difficult. The effects of this assault have been major to the prison, showing how their security, staff-to-inmate ratio, and other issues need to be fixed immediately. The prison has also stopped visitations for a period of time and stayed quiet. Hopefully, more statements by law enforcement will be released to the public, and the prison not only learns its lesson, but also the people involved in the situation.
